Why 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' Almost Ruined the Franchise

After Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven revitalized the teen horror genre with the launch of the Scream film series in 1996, the first film to capitalize on the success was the 1997 teen slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was scripted by Williamson, based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name. Boosted by its proximity to Scream, audiences gravitated toward I Know What You Did Last Summer with its premise of four teenage friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they supposedly killed a man. The success of the film necessitated a 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, in which the two survivors of the first film, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., are terrorized at a secluded island resort in the Bahamas.
