Hurts announce 15th anniversary vinyl picture disc reissue of classic debut ‘Happiness’

Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson of Hurts

Hurts have announced a vinyl reissue of their classic album ‘Happiness’ to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Check out the details below.

The alt-pop duo – formed by Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson – will be sharing the new version of the debut album on May 23 as an expanded limited edition double-vinyl picture. Visit here to pre-order.

Originally shared in 2009, the album helped catapult the band to the top of the charts across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Finland and more, and hit singles ‘Better Than Love’, ‘Wonderful Life’ and ‘Stay’ helped it sell over 2million copies globally and go 16-times platinum.

Described in a new press release as “a record which has since cast a towering influence over the subsequent alt-pop world with its contrast of affecting emotional intensity and glacial synth-pop tones”, the 2025 edition includes the full tracklist as well as bonus material from the era. This includes ‘Affair’, ‘Mother Nature’ and ‘Happiness’ from the ‘Deluxe Edition’ – all of which now make their vinyl debut.

It also includes the anti-festive anthem ‘All I Want for Christmas Is New Year’s Day’ and a ‘Wonderful Life’ remix from Arthur Baker. Check out the artwork and full tracklist below.

Upon its initial release, ‘Happiness’ went on to become the fastest-selling debut band of 2010 in the UK, and was given an 8/10 rating by NME, which described the songs as being “fearsomely well-crafted” and “as clean-lined and immaculate as a well-cut suitwrote”. The review also praised the album itself as being “billowing, escapist nonsense that raises your heart rate, slaps a smile on your face and sounds godlike when drunk”.

Over the following years, the debut record also saw Hutchcraft and Anderson win two NME Awards. The first was in 2011, when they took home the win at the ceremony for the Best New Band award, and the second was in 2012 they were up for both Best Track and Best Video for ‘Sunday’ – taking home the trophy for the latter.

News of the vinyl reissue comes just months after Hurts teased their comeback and then announced shows in London and Berlin. Also celebrating the 15th anniversary of the record, the London show will be held in Brixton on May 22, and the Berlin gig will be at the Tempodrom on May 24. Visit here for any remaining tickets.

“It’s hard to believe these songs are 15 years old. The period of writing and releasing the record feels like a strange dream. Close but impossibly out of reach,” the members said at the time.

“It was a kind of immaculate conception. 12 songs written pretty much in order, one after another. Like they were desperate to get out of us. Each of those songs has lived a million lifetimes since then. They’ve travelled to every corner of the world, and taken us along for the ride.”

Since the album’s release, Hurts shared four more albums: ‘Exile’, ‘Surrender’, ‘Desire’ and ‘Faith’. Since then, Hutchcraft has worked with various artists as a songwriter, including Louis Tomlinson, Calvin Harris, Tom Grennan, PNAU and Courteeners.
