'Superman' Review: James Gunn's Bold Vision Is a Game-Changer for the DC Universe
James Gunn puts his indelible stamp on Superman with an audacious live-action beginning to the DC Universe's (DCU) new Gods and Monsters era. Gunn pays respectful homage to Christopher Reeve and Richard Donner's 1978 classic, but also makes significant changes with his interpretation of Superman/Clark Kent and the meaning of heroism in a world divided by geopolitics, corrosive social media and unscrupulous billionaires. In Gunn's vision, Superman's efforts to save lives and promote harmony conflict with nationalistic ideals of "truth, justice and the American way." This philosophical agenda is told through mind-blowing action, surprisingly bloody violence and Gunn's unique humor, which may not appeal to all audiences.
