Alissic has shared her debut EP ‘ARC 01: MAIDEN’, and spoken to NME about her process, what’s next, and expecting twins with Bring Me The Horizon‘s Oli Sykes.

The Brazilian avant-pop star – real name Alissa Salles – has been releasing music since 2020, but only now emerges with her first EP.

Salles described the record as “a scrapbook of everything in my head: sounds, feelings, dreams, nightmares, voice notes, frog rescue plans, spiritual awakenings, and a lot of late night existential crises that somehow turned into pop songs” and written and produced by herself along with “a little help from a few talented friends, including my husband Oliver Sykes, who owed me after I played a cyborg on his metal album” [‘Post Human: Nex Gen‘].

Alissic and Sykes made headlines last month when they took to social media for a gender-reveal video and to share that they’re expecting twins.

“We were a little nervous to do that,” Alissic told NME. “It feels a bit weird to be like, ‘Here we go! We’re pregnant!’ But it was really cool and everyone’s been really nice.”

Asked about the impact of pregnancy on her creative life, Alissic replied: “It’s definitely made me feel more connected with my inner child. I feel so excited about it. I know that whatever I do will be connected to this childish world now. That’s a part of me. I’m just really excited for what’s to come – but I have no idea what’s going to happen.

“I don’t think I’ve ever even held a baby before. This is definitely going to inspire me. In being a parent, you see the world again to show it to your kids. All the magic comes back to you a little bit, so I’m sure that will definitely impact my art.”

‘ARC 01: MAIDEN’ was recorded between Brazil and the UK, with Alissic having “lived with the songs for two years now” while she “battled with my old label, shed a few identities, and decided to start from scratch”.

“The songs are kind of old now,” she told us. “I did them ages ago. It just feels so good to let go and let people hear it and connect with it. I’m so overwhelmed at the moment.

“I knew from the beginning what I wanted to do – for each EP to be its own arc representing different states of my life. My older songs that aren’t on the EP are like ‘arc zero’, the before time. ‘The Maiden’ is my debut as a young person figuring out the world, going through spiritual moments and heartbreaks. It’s a representation of that.

“These are songs that I made a while ago, so I have to put them out in the world before I can start doing something new. I feel like ‘The Maiden’ name connects with that idea.”

Explaining the sound of the record, Salles said that her focus was on pushing herself rather than “trying to make the songs catchy or anything”.

“I’m just experimenting and I haven’t been able to do that until now,” she admitted. “I’ve been releasing songs I thought were singles, and never had the chance to show people the songs where I’m just vibing with no expectations.”

As for the next part of “the arc” – a string of EPs before she works on a full album – Alissic revealed that she was looking to do something “a bit heavier”.

“It feels like the easiest path for me for experimenting and creating the songs,” she told NME. “I’ve been doing a lot of pop music, which I love, but for a while it was quite hard to find the people to help me get exactly what I wanted. The reason why the songs took so long was in finding people who had time to finish everything. It was hard, so for the next arc I’m going to really embrace the flow of what’s been given to me.”

She added: “The heavier stuff feels like the right thing and like it connects a bit more with the next arc where I’m going through a new period of life. I have everything planned in my mind but I never know what’s going to happen. I guess life just throws up a new adventure.”
