Charli XCX: “My next record will probably be a flop, which I’m down for to be honest”

Charli XCX has spoken about her follow-up to ‘Brat’, revealing that she’s prepared for it to “be a flop” – see what she had to say below.

The three-time Grammy Award-winning artist released her sixth album ‘Brat‘ last year to critical acclaim. Upon the release of ‘Brat’, Charli saw an unprecedented surge in popularity, resulting in the months-long Brat Summer, complete with her groundbreaking remix album, sold-out arena tours and more.

Earlier this week, Charli spoke with Culted at Cannes about what’s next for the ‘Von Dutch’ musician, and whether she’s feeling any pressure with crafting ‘Brat”s follow-up.

“I don’t really feel the pressure to create another record like ‘Brat’ because when I was making it, even though I really believed in it and totally knew what I wanted to do with it, I had no idea how it would be received. I was really doing it for myself and marketing it in the way I wanted to for myself but I had no clue that people would kind of connect to it in the way that they did,” she said.

Charli went on to hint that she’s expecting her next album to go in a completely different direction, which could result in a “flop”: “You can never really do the same thing twice and my next record will probably be a flop which I’m down for to be honest.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve been told about what her next album could look like. In February, her producers A.G. Cook, Finn Keane and George Daniel – who is also Charli’s fiancée – teased that the follow-up is shaping up to be “anti-Brat”: “Chatting to Charli now, there is a desire in her to do the complete opposite thing again, which is very in keeping with her ethos. Some of the conversations we’re having and music we’ve been playing around with the last couple of months have been completely the opposite.”

A couple of days later, Charli herself shed light on her next record: “I’m definitely thinking about it… I’m just so deep in this, I can’t see outside of ‘brat’, but it’s funny. I kind of want to make a Lou Reed record, to be honest. That would definitely be a pretty big swing.”

‘Brat’ scored a four-star review from Hannah Mylrea, who wrote for NME: “Growing pains, grief and aching doubts come alongside self-confidence, celebration and the knowledge of the place XCX holds in the musical landscape – indeed, she kicks off ‘360’ with the knowing: “I went my own way and I made it / I’m your favourite reference baby”. With ‘Brat’, XCX demonstrates that going her own way will always sound pretty good.”

The album went on to be named NME‘s best album of 2024, with Karen Gwee writing: “‘Brat’ as cultural sensation was a sight to behold, to be sure. But ‘Brat’ as an album – the record at the core of the rollout, the music beneath the marketing – is quite simply exceptional… This album is not only peak Charli, but a new bar set for modern pop.”

Most recently, Charli celebrated the fifth anniversary of her pandemic album ‘How I’m Feeling Now’ by releasing a video for ‘Party 4 U’ – check it out here.
