It’s Giving Toxic: Grey’s Anatomy Should’ve Pulled the Plug on Link & Jo, Not Married Them

I should preface this by saying that I’m not obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve tried to get into it over the years, but it never quite stuck with me.
However, when I learned that a bunch of new interns were joining in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20, I decided there was no better time to get into it.
Some of the actors are favorites of mine, so the worst outcome is that other people get in the way of me enjoying my favorites’ work.
And for the most part, Grey’s Anatomy exemplifies what I dislike most about procedurals, especially ones set in hospitals, precincts, and firehouses: no one is aware of a world outside their immediate environment.
I’ve long argued that mixing relationships is a recipe for disaster, and there is no better indicator of this than this show. Everywhere you turn, someone is at a different stage of a romantic or sexual relationship with someone else.
In these halls that seem so big yet so small, people are crossing paths with someone they’ve hooked up with, plan to hook up with, or are hooking up with.
And you know I’m all for people having fun. However, what happens after the fun is not fun, and I’d do anything to avoid that.
But this is not about me. The negative consequence of having shows where characters are hooking up when they’re coworkers is that it results in unnecessary drama that eclipses any interesting storylines.
Link and Jo’s Marriage Won’t End Well
Which brings me to Link and Jo, a couple that got married in Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 17.
As I mentioned, I’m not deeply familiar with the show, having only seen it in the past two or three seasons. I could be wrong. I don’t think that I am, but I could be.
My familiarity with Link and Jo’s individual histories or their story together is limited. But from what I’ve seen, I’m not impressed.
I noticed something was off with them a few episodes into the show. It was a constant oscillation between blowouts and apologies.
In all fairness, relationship dramas in the show are extremely contrived, but there is something special about Link and Jo’s ability to argue about stupid stuff.
The worst part is that it’s not equal. It always starts with Jo getting mad about something, taking it out on Link, and the latter bowing to her every whim and desire.
It got worse when she became pregnant, and Link could never do anything right. I was convinced at some point that she genuinely hated him.
As their wedding was advancing in Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, I kept waiting for her to realize that she didn’t like him any longer and put them both out of their misery.
I have seen couples who believe that constant arguing is a regular part of a relationship. And it is, but only in unhealthy ones.
Going into Season 23, they are married, but the pressure keeps increasing from now on. They will combine their lives, and suddenly Grey Sloan’s problems will appear compounded.
Will We Have More Jolink Drama in the Next Season?

They already have children and are expecting twins. Children, especially young ones, will test the limits of what one person can take and what a relationship will withstand.
I don’t see Jo and Link being able to weather the roughest storms of marriage if small winds shake them this much.
And if they were real people, I’d hope that they would be able to work things out. But since this is a TV show, nobody has time for this again. At any given point, someone’s marriage is in trouble in this show.
Grey’s Anatomy can do better than flooding the narrative with pessimistic outcomes in relationships. But this is pure speculation. Things may change.
