The Super Mario Bros Movie

The title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been revealed – and gaming fans are stoked.

The Mario movie was released in 2023 and was a smash at the box office, grossing more than $1.3billion. However it got a mixed response from critics and long-time Mario fans.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie took loose inspiration from the hit video game series and saw plumber brothers Mario and Luigi get sucked into The Mushroom Kingdom. Mario then teamed up with Princess Peach and Donkey Kong to defeat Bowser, before returning home. A post-credit scene teased the arrival of Yoshi and later, a sequel was confirmed.

Now Universal has accidentally confirmed the title of the sequel. In a press release about future projects, a list of “exciting film projects” was shared, which included Super Mario World. Shortly after it was uploaded, the reference to Super Mario World was removed but the news had already started circulating on social media.

And Mario fans are stoked about the title. Super Mario World was released in 1990 for the SNES and is regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. Like previous titles, gamers could play as either Mario or Luigi in the 2D side-scroller but Super Mario World added a number of new power-ups and gameplay features to the series as well as introducing Yoshi.

The plot of Super Mario World follows on from the events of Super Mario Bros. 3 and sees Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach holidaying in Dinosaur Land after saving The Mushroom Kingdom. However Bowser and his seven Koopalings kidnap Peach – it’s up to Mario, Luigi and their new friend Yoshi to save the day.

“If the movie actually takes place in Super Mario World’s Dinoland I will be excited. It’s still my favourite Mario game of all time,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “It’s my favourite game of all time so the fact they’re name the movie after the GOAT is so hype,” added another. “Sometimes the obvious decision is the right decision,” wrote a third.

“My hope is that Wario is the main villain of this movie,” said one fan. “My theory is that it’s going to be based on Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Land and Wario Land. Combining many games into one for a general adaptation of Super Mario World sounds fire to me,” added another.

The news has also sparked a debate about what other Mario games would make great movies, with Super Mario Galaxy, Sunshine and Odyssey all fan-favourite contenders.

Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo confirmed a live-action adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda is in development and is currently penciled in for a March 2027 release. However the fourth Sonic The Hedgehog movie is due to release one week earlier, with fans dubbing the cinema clash “Barbenheimer for gamers”.

In other news, Tony Hawk has revealed he has “aspirations” for a remastered version of Tony Hawk’s Underground to be released.
