‘Succession’ fans aren’t sure about creator’s new film ‘Mountainhead’: “Another movie about the wealthy being shit bags”

The trailer for Succession creator Jesse Armstrong’s new film dropped today, and reactions from fans online have been mixed.

Armstrong is making his directorial debut with Mountainhead, which he also wrote. It stars Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith as four billionaire friends who meet up for a snowy getaway during some kind of international crisis.
Watch the trailer below.
It appears that Schwartzman’s Hugo is playing host at the alpine retreat to his three fellow “presidents of tech”: Carell’s Randall, Youssef’s Jeff, and Smith’s Venis. There is some tension between Jeff and Venis in particular from the start, with the former calling the latter’s platform “racist and shitty” – and as news of conflict, violence and political unrest around the world filter onto the friends’ screens, saying that it has “inflamed a volatile situation”.
That Mountainhead comes from the Succession team is clear, with the luxurious setting, witty writing and handheld camera evoking Armstrong’s wildly successful HBO drama about the Roy family and their media empire. But that likeness is what’s causing some fans to be sceptical about the new film, with many sharing their reactions online.
In response to a post sharing the teaser in the r/movies subreddit, one user wrote: “Another program about the wealthy being shit bags. Yawn.”
Another commented: “Kinda feels weird for Jesse Armstrong’s first post-Succession project to be a movie that just seems like a Succession spinoff with forgettable side characters…I’m sure the acting and writing will be at a high level but would love to see him do something different.”
