'The Leftovers' Was Surprisingly Inspired by 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'

For anyone who's seen both the acclaimed HBO series The Leftoversand Australian filmmaker Peter Weir's 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock,it probably wouldn't come as a surprise to know that the former was heavily influenced by the latter. After all, both The Leftovers and Picnic at Hanging Rock center on a group of people who mysteriously vanish without a trace in a seemingly supernatural fashion. Picnic revolves around the vanishing of three teenage schoolgirls and a teacher who disappear while exploring the eponymous rock, while The Leftovers opens with the spontaneous disappearance of 2% of the entire world's population in an event dubbed "The Sudden Departure." Furthermore, both narratives avoid resolving their central mysteries in favor of focusing on how they affect the surrounding community, making for a somewhat frustrating viewing experience for both.
