'Avatar' Is the Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time. Where Is the Cultural Impact?

Promising a cinematic adventure unlike any other, James Cameron's Avatar debuted in December 2009, primed for success. Journalists tripped over themselves touting the amazing use of 3-D effects and motion capture, viewers so immersed in the world they allegedly couldn't stand the reality of leaving the theaters. It wowed everyone — or so we thought — nominated for Oscars and raking in billions and billions, leading to a boom in immersive theater viewing. But then, as soon as the 3-D hoopla died down, something odd happened. We all shrugged and forgot about it for 13 years.
