George Lucas reveals why Yoda talks backwards in ‘Star Wars’

Yoda, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

George Lucas has revealed why Yoda talks backwards in the Star Wars universe.

The Jedi master first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back and has become legendary for his back-to-front phrases such as: “The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see, the future is.”

Variety reports that during an appearance at a screening for Episode V in Hollywood, Lucas explained why he gave the character such an unusual way of speaking.

“If you speak regular English, people won’t listen that much,” he said. “But if he had an accent, or it’s really hard to understand what he’s saying, they focus on what he’s saying.

“He was basically the philosopher of the movie. I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen – especially 12-year-olds.”

Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that a billion dollar Star Wars TV series created by Lucas was scrapped in the noughties, according to producer Rick McCallum.

McCallum said he remembers himself and Lucas having “over 60 scripts” for the show with “the most wonderful writers in the world” working on it, and said of the scripts, “These were dark, they were sexy, they were violent.”

He said of the show, “I mean, it would have blown-up the whole Star Wars universe … And Disney definitely would’ve never offered to buy Star Wars from George. It’s one of the great disappointments of our life.”

In 2012, Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney for $4billion (£3billion). Since then, they’ve released three movies in the sequel trilogy: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise Of Skywalker. There have also been two standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story, as well as a range of TV series to expand the franchise.

Another movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, starring Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White and Johnny Coyne and directed by Jon Favreau, is set for release in May 2026, too.

Elsewhere, it was recently confirmed that the original cinema cut of Star Wars will be screened for the first time in many years as part of the British Film Institute’s (BFI) Film On Film Festival on June 12.

This week also saw the release of season two of Andor. Reviewing the new series, NME awarded it four stars and said “the best Star Wars spin-off gets even better,” adding: “It may be the sequel to a prequel but this gritty, grown-up tale takes the franchise to new heights.”
