Grand Theft Auto 6 fans think the highly-anticipated game could be released in September after Borderlands 4 was moved forward.

Borderlands 4 was originally due for release on September 23 but yesterday (April 29), it was confirmed the game would now be launching on September 12.

Confirming the news in a blog post, Gearbox’s Graeme Timmins wrote: “We’ve announced that Borderlands 4’s launch has moved up to September 12, 2025, meaning you’ll get to enjoy the looter shooter action even earlier,” which doesn’t really explain why they’ve decided to change things up.

Fans have begun speculating that the shift is to avoid clashing with another big release. Earlier this month it was announced Bungie’s new first-person shooter Marathon would be released on September 23 but others believe Gearbox are avoiding Grand Theft Auto 6’s planned release.

Both Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6 are published by Take-Two Interactive, so it makes sense they’d want to stop two of their best-selling titles from clashing.

Replying to the news on X, one fan asked “getting it out before GTA 6?” to which the official Borderlands account responded with: “I mean”.

“Oh so they finally told you guys when GTA 6 is dropping huh?” wrote another fan. ”So GTA 6 in September?” asked another.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially revealed at the end of 2023 but Rockstar hasn’t revealed any more details beyond what was shown in the brief teaser trailer.

Earlier this year, Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick said he was feeling “good” about Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out in autumn 2025 despite rumours of a delay. He also promised the game would be “worth waiting for”.

In March, he explained why GTA 6 still didn’t have a release date or a second trailer. “We want to maintain the anticipation and the excitement. We do have competitors who will describe their release schedule for years in advance, and we found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand, and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation,” he continued. “I don’t always get it exactly right, but that’s what we’re trying to do.”

In other news, Call Of Duty has revealed more details about the upcoming stoner-inspired Blaze Of Glory event.
