Jason Blum reveals why ‘M3GAN 2.0’ flopped at the box office

M3GAN 2.0

Jason Blum has revealed why he thinks M3GAN 2.0 flopped at the box office.

The film was released on June 27 to disappointing box office figures, and now the Blumhouse creator and producer has spoken on Spotify’s The Town podcast about the follow up to the 2023 original release.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone, the sequel picks up two years after the AI doll’s murderous rampage as Gemma (Allison Williams) resurrects her infamous creation to take down a new military-grade weapon, named Amelia.

Other cast members in the sequel include Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN, alongside Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp and Jemaine Clement.

“We all thought M3GAN was like Superman,” Blum said of Blumhouse’s approach to the M3GAN sequel. “We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we classically over-thought how powerful people’s engagement was, really, with her.”

He went on to say the film’s “genre-swap” from horror to action, plus the swap from autumn to a summer release, could be factors behind the disappointing box office figures.

“We thought she could live in the summer, right? We thought, ‘We’re going from a little movie to a tentpole!’”

He went on to say he wasn’t concerned about Blumhouse’s future in the podcast, adding: “If you look at any massive talent, whether they are a movie star or whether they are a production company or whether they are a studio, every one of your favourite people have gone through slumps.”

In a three star review of the film, NME said: “In fact, for a good third of its runtime, the second instalment in the franchise is actually an advancement on its predecessor. Alas, M3GAN 2.0 ultimately spirals out of its creators’ control, with the plot becoming all but incomprehensible and betraying its own squiffy logic.

“Through it all, though, the movie never loses its sense of humour or love for its characters. Ironically for a film about AI-powered killer dolls, M3GAN 2.0 has a lot of heart.”
