'Karate Kid: Legends' Should've Cut Ralph Macchio

Karate Kid: Legends has finally hit theaters. The sixth entry in the franchise serves as an entry point for younger viewers, continuing the story set out in 1984's The Karate Kid, its sequels, and the popular Netflix series Cobra Kai. It also continues the 2010 film The Karate Kid and retroactively turns what was initially meant to be a remake into part of the larger Karate Kid franchise. Karate Kid: Legends works best when it centers on new lead Li Fong (Ben Wang) and his journey. The film offers a unique spin on the Karate Kid formula in the first half of the film, and Li becomes the trainer to an older boxer (Joshua Jackson), who also happens to be the dad of Mia (Sadie Stanley), before finding a natural point in the story to have him step into the ring.
