New ‘Game Of Thrones’ game will let you change show’s controversial ending

A new video game adaptation of the hit HBO show Game Of Thrones has been announced.
Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros is an “epic” real-time-strategy game that will let you take control of one of the great houses of Westeros and get involved with The War Of The Five Kings.
“Conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer. Command the Great Houses, rally iconic heroes, and rewrite the fate of the realm. Do you have the strength to seize the Iron Throne,” reads the Steam description. Players will be able to lead House Stark, Lannister or Targaryen in the game, or “raise an army of the dead” as the Night King.
A cinematic reveal trailer features familiar characters from the TV show, with Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jaime Lannister all featuring. However, rather than following the same narrative beats of the show, developers have made it clear that in War For Westeros, players have full control of how the story ends. In the trailer, Jon Snow is killed by the Night King while Daenerys Targaryen is taken out by an enemy soldier.
“This time, you’re not watching the Game Of Thrones – you’re playing it,” said game director Ryan McMahon in a statement. “War For Westeros puts you in the seat of power, whether you’re leading the Starks, Targaryens, or Lannisters, or even commanding the Night King and his army of the dead, you’ll wield real power and rewrite the fate of the realm.”
It should make some Game Of Thrones fans happy after the controversial ending to the TV show, which saw Jon Snow kill Daenerys Targaryen to protect the people of Westeros in the season finale, while the Night King was taken out by Arya Stark earlier on in the season.
“I don’t understand how people can come to hate something that they once loved,” Game Of Thrones author George R. R. Martin said at the time. “If you don’t like a show, don’t watch it! How has everything become so toxic?”
However he’s recently criticised adaptations for making changes from the source material. “In most of the cases where a Hollywood screenwriter makes something their own, they don’t improve it. I think the majority of cases it’s the opposite”.
Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros is due to launch at some point next year.
In other news, Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Game Pass subscribers will soon be able to play 18 huge new titles as Day One releases.
