It looks like the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could be getting some bizarre new additions.

From the bongos that came with rhythm game Donkey Konga to the revolutionary motion sensing Wii Remote, Nintendo has never been afraid to try new things with its controllers.

The Nintendo Switch 2 continues that trend with optical sensors on the detachable Joy-Cons, which let the player use them like a mouse. The console launched earlier this year but Nintendo has recently filed two new patents for add-on Joy-Con accessories (via Nintendo Patent Watch).

The first is a handle that acts as a crank, while the second is a clickable wheel that also utilises the optical sensors on the side of the Joy-Con. You can see mock-ups of both here.

Fans are currently baffled about why the Switch 2 would need a clickable wheel but the crank has many excited about fishing. A number of popular Nintendo games have fishing as a core part of their gameplay, including Animal Crossing, The Legend Of Zelda and Pokémon. Others are hoping for Mario Fishing after the plucky plumber has already tried his hand at soccer, tennis and golf.

Of course, just because Nintendo has filed a patent, it doesn’t mean they’re planning to produce the Joy-Con accessories. However a patent is how fans first found out about the Switch 2 Joy-Con’s mouse function, long before the console was officially announced.

Last month it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 could be getting more games that were previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 after the company set about hiring a new Senior Director Of Multiplatform & Account Management.

According to the job listing, the lucky candidate will “play a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the global commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios software titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo and mobile.”

In other news, it looks like Hollow Knight: Silksong will definitely be released at some point in the next nine weeks after the launch date for the handheld Xbox ROG Ally was leaked.
