Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 Episode 4 Review: A Dangerous Game of Power and Love

Power has been a prevalent theme throughout the Outlander franchise since the beginning, and Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 Episode 4 puts that front and center with devastating precision.

Every relationship, every secret, and every betrayal ties back to who holds the power—and who’s willing to risk it all for love.

Let’s start with Julia, because honestly, she remains the heartbeat of this spinoff. She’s making bold decisions on the fly and masterfully manipulating the situation in the name of saving her unborn child and finding her way back to Henry.

Julia has quickly become one of the most layered characters in the Outlander universe. She’s smart, calculating, and yes — sometimes reckless — but every choice she makes carries a deeper emotional weight.

Of course, the fallout from her decision to sleep with Lord Lovat at the end of Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 Episode 3 was always going to bring problems.

He’s a despicable man who thrives on control, cruelty, and domination, and the fact that he has maintained power in Inverness for so long is a testament to how unchecked his behavior has been.

Julia Is Taking Bold Swings on Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Aligning herself with him is a gamble, but Julia has shown she’s not afraid to play a long con. If she does this right, she can betray him when he least expects it — assuming Davina doesn’t blow up her entire plan.

The look of disappointment on Davina’s face when she realized the true extent of Julia’s lies spoke volumes. Outlander loves to remind us that nothing is ever off the table, and there’s a real chance Davina could throw Julia to the wolves if she feels threatened.

Her connection to Lord Lovat through Brian adds another wrinkle — would she protect her son’s place in this brutal world over Julia’s safety? The uncertainty makes every scene between the women feel like it’s teetering on the edge of betrayal.

Julia’s pregnancy is now a loaded weapon in this chess match. The big question is how Lord Lovat will spin it to his advantage. Will he elevate her standing at Castle Leathers, viewing her as a valuable partner in his legacy?

Or will she only hold power in his eyes if she produces a male heir? In true Outlander fashion, every answer leads to more dangerous possibilities.

One of the cleverest moments of the hour came when Julia used nettles to fake a reaction, playing right into Lord Lovat’s superstitions. Not only did it buy her much-needed freedom from the oppressive walls of the castle, but it also gave her a front-row seat to one of the series’ most important connections: Brian and Ellen.

Brian’s decision to involve Julia in his risky plan to meet Ellen was equal parts foolish and inspired. Foolish, because sending Julia into MacKenzie territory could have ended in disaster.

Inspired, because Julia has the perspective and resourcefulness that most people around him lack. She knows what’s at stake, not just for herself, but for history. And as reckless as it seemed, it worked — at least for now.

A Reunion for the Ages

The moment Julia and Ellen finally shared the screen was everything. This is what Blood of My Blood has been building toward: these storylines we never thought would intersect, beginning to entwine in shocking, emotional ways.

Julia, a woman ripped from her own time and her own love, recognizes true passion when she sees it. Her advocacy for Ellen and Brian’s relationship feels rooted in her own longing for Henry, and watching her help another couple defy the odds is a perfect parallel.

The danger, of course, never lingers far. Julia’s sharp eyes catching sight of Dougal in the distance was a pulse-pounding reminder of how fragile this balance is. One wrong move, one unlucky glance, and history itself could be rewritten.

And speaking of Henry—his arc this week quietly impressed me. Tasked with fulfilling Isaac’s demand to squeeze an extra shilling out of tenants, Henry faced what seemed like an impossible task. Yet, somehow, he pulled it off with charm, wit, and the kind of determination that shows exactly why Julia fell in love with him.

But Isaac is no fool. His frustration is simmering, and the power dynamic between the men is shifting. Isaac may have been enchanted by Henry at first, but he expected compliance, not independence.

Henry’s ambition and his singular focus on finding Julia are threatening that balance, and you can feel the tension building. On paper, Henry has leverage, but in reality, he’s trapped in a cage. His choices are narrowing, and the walls are closing in.

That’s what makes Blood of My Blood so compelling—it’s telling two love stories against the backdrop of oppression, political maneuvering, and violence. Both Julia and Henry, and Brian and Ellen, are navigating treacherous waters where loyalty and power are constantly tested.

The show is threading the needle beautifully, giving us echoes of classic Outlander while firmly establishing its own identity. If anything, Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 Episode 4 cements this spinoff’s ability to stand on its own two feet.

This Spinoff Means Business

It’s not living in Claire and Jamie’s shadow — it’s carving out its own brutal, romantic, and unpredictable story. The duality of the romances, the danger of time travel, and the ever-present specter of betrayal make it feel like the stakes are higher than ever.

The hour wasn’t just a setup — it was payoff, momentum, and a clear sign that the series knows exactly what kind of story it wants to tell. Julia and Henry’s struggle to reunite feels urgent and heartbreaking. Brian and Ellen’s romance feels inevitable yet impossible.

And Lord Lovat? He’s the kind of villain who thrives in this world, making every scheme and betrayal sting all the more.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is giving me everything I hoped for and more, and I honestly can’t wait to see where things go next. Starz has knocked it out of the park with this franchise expansion.

What did you think of this episode’s balance of romance and political scheming? Do you think Julia’s lies will catch up to her sooner rather than later? And how long can Henry keep Isaac off his back before everything crumbles?

Let’s chat in the comments.
