‘Roblox’ gardening game has taken the internet by storm

A new Roblox gardening mini-game has taken the internet by storm, with more than 16million people playing last weekend.
Roblox mini-game Grow A Garden launched in March this year and sees players buying seeds, cultivating crops and selling them, before repeating the cycle. “Are you ready to grow your very own garden? Buy seeds from the shop when they restock, plant them, wait for them to grow, and collect the profits! Flex fruits, find friends, and have fun,” reads the official description from developers The Garden Game. “Remember, your garden literally grows while you are offline.”
It sounds straightforward enough but the game has attracted a huge playerbase. Grow A Garden has been visited more than 8.9billion times and favourited by more than 3.5million players in just three months. On Friday morning (June 20), more than 2.3million people were playing concurrently and last weekend, that number was more than 16million (via RoMonitor). That’s higher than Fortnite’s biggest ever weekend (14.3million in 2020) and more than the population of London.
Roblox game ‘Grow a Garden’ peaked at 16,411,769 players at once, breaking the world record

Explaining Grow A Garden’s popularity, one user said:” I only started 5 days ago but it’s actually a super relaxing/chill game. It’s fun waiting to see if you grow any super rare plants, plus the community is super kind from what I’ve seen. On my first day, I had like 5 rare crops given to me, from people I’d never met before, just because my garden was tiny and they could see I was just starting out.”
Others have praised the fact that crops can grow while you’re offline and you only need to log in occasionally to keep progressing. Some fans have criticised the frustrating seed shop interface and the “boring” gameplay, but Grow A Garden still has over 3million likes compared to just 262,000 dislikes on the Roblox shop.
“Just a week ago I was talking about how I couldn’t understand why people liked Grow A Garden so much but now I FEAR I’M ADDICTED TOO…” added another player on X.
Last year, Charli XCX collaborated with Roblox minigame Dress To Impress. However earlier this year it was revealed that the creator of the viral ‘Apple Dance’ routine was suing Roblox after the company allegedly abandoned conversations about licensing the dance before they included it without her permission.
It was also confirmed that Roblox was being investigated by the US Government. In February, it was announced the gaming platform is involved in an ongoing investigation being led by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, whose primary goal is to crack down on manipulation of financial markets, but further details are still unavailable.
In other news, Nintendo fans are convinced Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song ‘Espresso’ contains a subtle nod to The Legend Of Zelda.
