The ending of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ explained: Does June reunite with her daughter Hannah?

The Handmaid’s Tale season six has concluded, but does June reunite with her daughter Hannah? Read on to find out.

The dystopian drama series, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, has been running on Hulu since 2017, with Channel 4 and Amazon Prime Video carrying the show in the UK.

The episodes went out in the US several weeks in advance of the UK, with the 10th and final instalment of the sixth run arriving on July 5.

The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of an alternative future in which a theocratic, totalitarian regime named Gilead has taken control in the US after a second civil war. Men hold all power in the new regime, with fertile women – or handmaids – forced to bear children for the ruling elite.

Elisabeth Moss plays June Osborne, a woman who was captured as she attempted to escape to Canada with her husband and daughter. Joseph Fiennes, Ann Dowd and Bradley Whitford co-star.

In episode nine of this season, Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ soundtracked a scene in which June led a rebellion against the commanders of Gilead, with some Swifties believing they had spotted Swift herself in a cameo in the scene.

The final episodes shows that Boston has been liberated, with all of the Commanders killed. June realises that countless other cities and states still have to be conquered however, including Colorado, where she believes her daughter Hannah is.

Hannah has in fact been relocated to Washington D.C. under the care of Commander McKenzie. June rededicates herself to bringing her daughter home and continuing the fight for permanent liberation from Gilead.

June’s mother Holly encourages her to write a book about all that she has endured, and in the final moments we see her return to the Waterford house and her old room, as she begins to assemble her memoir.

The fact that June and Hannah are not reunited by the end may be a teaser for The Testaments, the upcoming spin-off show based on another Atwood novel. Hannah will be a central character in that show, which is in production now and is expected to land in 2026.
