The Last Of Us

HBO boss Casey Bloys has said The Last Of Us season three might be the end of the hit zombie drama.

The first season of HBO’s The Last Of Us adapted the plot of the hit video game, while the second season began to tell the story of The Last Of Us Part 2.

Earlier this year, HBO’s Francesca Orci revealed there had been “conversations” about the adaptation running for four seasons with showrunner Craig Mazin saying the show could run anywhere between three and five seasons “but four seems like a good number”.

After the end of season two, Mazin went on to say there was “no way to complete this narrative” with just one more season. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”

However, HBO CEO Casey Bloys has now revealed season three of The Last Of Us might be the last. “The series is definitely planned for 2027,” he told Variety. “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet.”

Earlier this month it was announced that The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann would be stepping away as co-showrunner on the HBO adaptation to focus on making more games. Fellow Naughty Dog employee Halley Gross (who worked as a writer and producer on the TV show) also confirmed she’d be leaving the project. It means Mazin will have total creative control over the future of The Last Of Us.

“It was fantastic to have Neil involved,” said Bloys. “A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.”

The second season of The Last Of Us may have inspired millions to try out the video game series but viewership of the finale was down 56 per cent compared to season one. There was also tension between long-term fans of the game and newcomers to the series. However, the hit show has been nominated for 16 awards at the 2025 Emmys.

In other news, Nintendo has confirmed the first two actors set to star in the live-action adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda.
