‘Tony Hawk’s Underground’ remake probably isn’t happening

It doesn’t look like the rumoured remake of Tony Hawk’s Underground is going ahead after the team behind Pro Skater 3+4 were reportedly laid off.
Back in 2020, Activision remastered the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Plans for Pro Skater 3 and 4 to get a similar update were initially scrapped after Vicarious Visions studio was absorbed by Activision but Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 finally launched last week, developed by Iron Galaxy.
Ahead of the release, Tony Hawk said he had “aspirations” for Underground to get remastered. The fan-favourite game was released in 2003 and acted as a soft reboot for the series. “It’s not up to me generally. I’ll campaign all I can, but I’m working with a much bigger company that’s a lot smarter than me,” he added.
However it seems unlikely we’ll be getting that Tony Hawk’s Underground remake anytime soon. One eagle-eyed fan noticed on LinkedIn (via Reddit) that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 lead developer was laid off back in February as part of a “last resort” effort to save Iron Galaxy. In total, 66 people lost their jobs and many fans are speculating that that wouldn’t have happened if Activision had plans for another Tony Hawk’s project.
Someone claiming to be the developer then took to Reddit to give fans a better idea of what happened. “The game industry is in a weird spot right now. I did get laid off, along with other super talented devs, but working on 3+4 was one of the greatest achievements of my career,” they explained.
“The majority of the team were Rumbleverse devs so after that got shut down, it was nice to have 3+4 to move on to. We loved putting this game together and wanted to make something core fans and new fans could enjoy. We love Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. I know it’s not perfect but I hope you all can see the love we put into the game and get some joy out of it.”
However they refused to comment on reports that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 took just 18 months to create.
Earlier this week, Tony Hawk had to defend the Pro Skater 3+4 soundtrack after backlash from fans. Despite featuring more than 60 songs, only ten are from the original games. He said he wanted to “keep it fresh” and help people “discover” new artists. Alien Ant Farm had previously said it was “disappointing” that their song ‘Wish’ had been cut from the game.
In other news, Mario Kart 64 is the latest soundtrack to join Nintendo’s dedicated streaming service – but fans just want the music from Mario Kart World.
