Katie Lee Biegel Dishes Why Catch of the Day Is The Perfect Summer Film

The Hallmark Channel hit it out of the park this year with its “Summer Nights” lineup. We loved the Providence Falls trilogy.

It’s ending with Catch of the Day, which includes the essence of summer fun — coastal living, beachy eats like lobster rolls, and reuniting with an old crush.

It’s the ultimate summer chick flick, and one of my favorite Food Network stars, Katie Lee Biegel, wrote the script and appears in the film.

Biegel has co-hosted The Kitchen for many years and has appeared as a frequent judge on Beat Bobby Flay.

She has written four cookbooks, and her novel, Groundswell, was also adapted into a Hallmark film; however, this is her first screenwriting credit.

In this exclusive interview, Biegel revealed what inspired her to write Catch of the Day, how she enjoyed working with Michael Rady and Emilie Ulerup, and which recipes will tie in to the film.

Biegel was excited to team up with Hallmark again and write her first movie.

“The heart of Catch of the Day is about a small family business. It’s set in Montauk. I live near Montauk, and I’ve watched it change over the past 20 years.”

“Many small businesses have been pushed out, and I think it’s so important for all communities to have that,” Biegel shared.

The film follows Sophie Monahan (Ullerup), who grew up in Montauk and at her father’s restaurant. She moves to Manhattan and works in a fancy restaurant, and her sister calls her to come home to help save their business.

Naturally, there is a romantic twist when she runs into her old high school crush, Cam (Rady), who’s running his family’s business.

This film will appeal to those rooting for second chances, flavor bombs, and Southern charm.

As Biegel admitted, she enjoys Hallmark films because they make her feel happy after watching them, so she wanted to make others feel that way.

Biegel admitted her character, Marissa, differed from her in real life. “I play Marissa, a food blogger who visits the restaurants. Sometimes, she’s nice, and other times, not so much. That was challenging as I aim to be positive on social media.”

Biegel added that it was a welcoming set, and Michael Rady and Emilie Ullerup made her feel comfortable in her first acting role.

While Biegel won’t be having an official cross-promotion for Catch of the Day on the Food Network, she will prepare some recipes from the film, such as her spaghetti with clams or her Cioppino, and share them on her Instagram.

These would pair nicely with the film for dinner.

Biegel suggested preparing a variety of appetizers, including deviled eggs, creamy dips, and coconut shrimp, to set the vibe for a girls’ night in.

Catch of the Day will transport viewers to the beaches of Montauk. It’s the ideal film to end Summer Nights with before the temps cool and schedules become crazier.

We couldn’t resist asking more about Katie’s future endeavors, and she elaborates on those and more about Catch of the Day in our full interview below.

Catch of the Day airs on Saturday, August 30 at 8/7c on the Hallmark Channel and streams the next day on Hallmark +.
