‘Top Gun 3’ is in the pipeline and Tom Cruise is working on it

Top Gun 3 is in the pipeline, according to Tom Cruise, who confirmed that he is “working” on it.
This comes as he is wrapping up his work in the Mission: Impossible series, with the final film Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning coming to UK theatres on May 21. Cruise has now discussed returning to his other projects – including Top Gun.
The actor said he is currently in the ideas phase of where to take the storyline. “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” he said on Australia’s Today. “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”
Cruise originated the role of Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun in 1986, before reprising it in 2022 in Top Gun: Maverick.
NME gave 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick three stars in a review, praising it for its ability to keep the thrill levels high and entertaining the audience.
The review reads: “Top Gun: Maverick does exactly what its intended audience wants it to do – pile on the airborne thrills and steely military heroics without knotting things up with too much moralising or complex character development. Its plot may just be an extended Rocky-style training film for the jet fighter equivalent of the bombing of the Death Star, but throwbacks to the original movie supply the emotional heart.”
In other Top Gun-related news, the cousin of a Top Gun: Maverick writer has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures over script credits.
Shaun Gray claims that he penned key scenes for the 2022 film after screenwriter Eric Warren Singer and director Joseph Kosinski enlisted his help to craft the story. He is seeking a share of profits from the film as a co-writer or, alternatively, unspecified damages for copyright infringement, according to a lawsuit filed in a New York federal court (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Paramount Pictures said in a statement that the lawsuit “is completely without merit” and that they “are confident that a court will reject this claim.”
Elsewhere, Cruise recently paid tribute to his late Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer, who died earlier this month, aged 65. Kilmer passed away on April 1 after a battle with pneumonia, as confirmed by his daughter Mercedes. He had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but later made a recovery.
