The Broadway ensemble took the stage at the 78th annual Tony Awards, with creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda joined by Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Ariana DeBose, and more.

To mark the show’s 10th anniversary, the Broadway cast performed a medley of songs from the award-winning musical. It opened with Miranda and Odom Jr., who sang ‘Non-Stop’ before being joined by the cast for ‘My Shot’, ‘The Schuyler Sisters’, ‘Guns and Ships’, ‘You’ll Be Back’ and ‘Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)’.

They then moved on to ‘The Room Where It Happens’ and ‘Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story’ before the finale of ‘Alexander Hamilton’.

Fans lauded the performance as “beautiful”, although many on social media were frustrated that Anthony Ramos, who played the dual roles of Philip Hamilton and John Laurens in the production, wasn’t given a prominent part in the medley.

“Ariana DeBose getting more screen time as the Bullet than Anthony Ramos is dastardly. Levels of pettiness from the Hamilton team perhaps never before seen on TV,” wrote one X/Twitter user.

“The camera avoided Anthony Ramos like no camera work I’ve ever seen before,” added another, with some fans convinced he wasn’t actually at the performance as he was shown so little.

Hamilton: An American Musical made its Broadway debut in August 2015. Created entirely by Miranda, the show reimagines the life of US Founding Father Alexander Hamilton through a groundbreaking blend of hip-hop, R&B, and traditional musical theatre.

It became a cultural phenomenon, earning critical acclaim, 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and a record-breaking cast album, with a filmed version released on Disney+ in 2020.

In NME’s five-star review of the film, Ali Shutler wrote: “Straddling the worlds of musical theatre and rap music, references to The Notorious B.I.G. sit comfortably alongside quotes from The Pirates of Penzance, the whole thing draws from the narrative-driven hip-hop records that made superstars of Kendrick LamarEminem and Snoop Dogg.

“A period drama that obsesses over legacy, Hamilton changed the game when it first hit the stage and now this bold, brilliant and daring filmed version is set to do it all over again.”

Earlier this year – a decade after the show was first performed and on what would have been Steven Sondheim’s 95th birthday –  Miranda posted screenshots on Instagram of email exchanges between the pair as he worked on an early version of the much-loved musical.

Recently, the cast of the musical cancelled their production at The Kennedy Center due to President Trump taking control of the venue.
