Zach Braff agrees to join ‘Scrubs’ reboot series

Zach Braff has joined the cast of the reboot of 2000s sitcom Scrubs, becoming the first original cast member to return for the new series.

Originally running from 2001-2010, Braff starred in the show as John Dorian aka J.D., an idealistic new medical intern at Sacred Heart Hospital who spends each episode navigating life and love. The actor was the lead character for eight seasons, before becoming a recurring guest star in season nine, which featured a new cast of younger doctors.

At its peak, the comedy had an audience of over 15million viewers and remains beloved by fans to this day. Braff launched the podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends in 2020 with co-star Donald Faison, in which the actors re-watch episodes and give behind the scenes anecdotes.

Last December, it was reported that the show would be returning, with creator Bill Lawrence serving as executive producer rather than showrunner. In February, he said he would be reviving the show for “selfish reasons”, relishing the opportunity to work with former cast and crewmembers again.

Now, Variety reports that Braff will be joining him, and at this point is the only cast member from the show’s original run to return. At this point there is no planned airing date, but the show is being developed by network ABC, who produced the first run and aired the final two seasons.

Last October, he spoke to the outlet about returning to his most famous role, saying: ““The idea of getting back together with my friends and doing like 10 or 12 episodes of maybe one or two seasons, and just laughing with everyone? That sounds like a dream”.

Despite his enthusiasm to return, Zach Braff did admit last year that he felt “exhausted” by the time Scrubs came to a close. “We were starting to repeat jokes. Everyone’s pretty fried,” he revealed on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “We would do insane hours that people don’t even do anymore. We didn’t really have much of a life outside of it. So we were just kind of fried”.
