20 Years Ago, 'The Pursuit of Happyness' Overshadowed 'Children of Men'
In the aftermath of Superman's release, and the most tiresome discussions regarding box office numbers and whether Man of Steel is more successful, we took a trip down memory lane to look back at one of the most outrageous box office travesties of the 2000s. The year was 2006, and Will Smith was ruling the industry. I, Robot and Hitch had been extremely successful for the star, and he was still searching for that big, dramatic role that would land him an Oscar. His film of that year, The Pursuit of Happyness, was yet another beloved box office hit for the Men in Black star, grossing $27 million in its opening weekend, something rare for a drama. Unfortunately, The Pursuit of Happyness also overshadowed another major release of December 2006: the sci-fi masterpiece directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Children of Men.
