Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford in ‘The West Wing’ reunion for ‘The Diplomat’ season three trailer

The trailer for the third season of The Diplomat has brought together two former West Wing co-stars as Bradley Whitford joins the cast.

From 1999-2006, he played White House Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in political drama The West Wing opposite Allison Janney. Now, the two reunite in the new season of the Netflix drama, which stars Keri Russell as a United States diplomat to the UK who help to diffuse international crises. Janney co-stars as the US Vice President.

The end of season two saw the previous President (Michael McKean) die, meaning Janney’s Grace Penn takes over in the Oval Office. Whitford joins the show as her husband now the First Gentleman. The change complicates matters between Penn and Russell’s character Kate Wyler, who has accused her of hatching a terrorist plot.

The trailer opens with the two former co-stars embracing, which will no doubt be nostalgic for West Wing fans who understand the connection. The pair both won Emmys during their time on the show, which would lead to successful careers in film and television. Janney would win an Oscar for her role in I, Tonya; while Whitford recently finished up on the hit show The Handmaid’s Tale.

The third season of The Diplomat is scheduled for an unspecified Autumn release on Netflix. The show has been a hit with audiences ever since its debut in 2023, with one fan describing it as “Witty, timely, thoroughly compelling with one of the best ensembles in recent memory”.

Last September, West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin attended an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the show at The White House. While there, he revealed he was considering a reboot, saying: “I didn’t think about it seriously, frankly, until today… We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow. But, if you’re asking me now, this is how I feel”.
