Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Pedro Pascal and more celebrities have signed an open letter in support of federal funding for LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention programmes in the US.

In April, a leaked draft from the US’ Department of Health and Human Services proposed several budget cuts for 2026, including cutting $50million worth of federal funding to 988, a programme that provides emergency crisis support to young members of the LGBTQ+ community contemplating suicide.

Following the leak, the Trevor Project has launched an open letter campaigning to save the 988 programme and federal funding of LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention programmes in general.

The letter has now signed by numerous celebrities, including the likes of Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Pedro Pascal, Dua Lipa, Troye Sivan, Cara Delevingne, Christina Aguilera, Daniel Radcliffe, Dasha, Ethel Cain, Eugene Lee Yang, Fletcher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Josh Hutcherson, King Princess, Margaret Cho, MØ, Noah Cyrus, Oliver Sim, Orville Peck, Paris Hilton, Sarah Paulson, SG Lewis, Tove Lo, Alan Cumming and more.

The Trevor Project’s campaign notes that since the 988 programme’s launch in 2022, it has connected “nearly 1.3million crisis contacts with life-saving, affirming care to LGBTQ+ young people during their most vulnerable moments”.

Per the Trevor Project’s estimation, over 1.8million youths in the LGBTQ+ community in the United States contemplate suicide every year, with one attempting suicide every 45 seconds.

The Trevor Project writes: “At a time of deep division, let this be something we as people can all agree on: no young person should be left without help in their darkest moment. Stripping away this lifeline leaves LGBTQ+ youth with the message that their lives are not worth saving. We refuse to accept that message.”

“To every LGBTQ+ young person reading this: you are not alone. We see you. We value you. You have the right to feel safe, supported, and loved exactly as you are. You deserve access to life-saving services that honor your humanity. You may be hurting. You may be scared. You may feel like no one hears you — but we do. We will keep showing up and speaking out. We will not stop fighting for you.”

You can sign the open letter here.

Earlier this year, the LGBTQ+ community in the United States faced a major setback at the hands of President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order declaring that the US government will only recognise two genders: male and female.

Euphoria star Hunter Schafer spoke out about the “harsh reality” of Trump’s anti-trans executive order, revealing her new passport now lists her gender as ‘Male’.

“Trans people are beautiful,” Schafer said on social media. “We are never going to stop existing, I am never going to stop being trans, a letter on a passport can’t change that. And fuck this administration. I don’t really have an answer on what to do about this but I feel it was important to share. This is real. So um yeah, fuck.”
