‘Black Myth: Wukong’ is getting a sequel, ‘Zhong Kui’

The team behind hit game Black Myth: Wukong has confirmed a follow-up, Zhong Kui, is currently in development.
Black Myth: Wukong was released last year for PS5 and PC and sold more than 10million copies in just three days. An Xbox version launched earlier this year. The single-player action-adventure game was inspired by the classic Chinese novel ‘Journey To The West’ and sees players take on the role of The Destined One as he tries to restore Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, to his former glory by collecting six ancient relics.
An expansion for Black Myth: Wukong had been teased but was never officially announced.
Last night (August 19) developers Game Science confirmed a follow-up game was in the early stages of development. Black Myth: Zhong Kui is another “single-player action role-playing game rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy,” and will be “set against the backdrop of the classic Chinese folktale ‘Zhong Kui Banishing Evil’.”
“The game will deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features that push our limits, while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets,” continued the statement from developers.
According to a FAQ section of their website, Black Myth: Zhong Kui won’t be released anytime soon because “the project is little more than an empty folder at this point”.
“We’re not even done with the story outline yet. The dev team, on the other hand, is absolutely fired up. Itching to tell new stories well and add fun new to the game, all while making sure Wukong players feel right at home – and catching them off guard in the best way.”

Game Science also explained why they decided to tell a new story, rather than create a direct sequel to Wukong. “Upon completing the journey with The Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – and build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features and to bring fresh ideas to our world. Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration. We are confident we can create new things.”
However they did tease a Wukong DLC was still in the works. “And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won’t end here.”
In other news, the release date for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been officially announced alongside details of an early access weekend.
