Chaos Twins: Halstead & Ripley Are a Chicago Med Dynamic I Don’t Want … But Might Need

If you’ve been following along with our Chicago Med content, you’d know that some of us aren’t big fans of Mitch Ripley.

We know some of you hate that, but we can’t help how we feel. It’s not everyone on our team, but the most vocal of us are Kendrick Lamar-level certified haters. Unapologetic about it, too. (Although we love Luke Mitchell!)

But do you know what I am a fan of? The potential maverick showdown between Ripley and veteran Will Halstead.

Yes. To the surprise of a few, I wasn’t the biggest Halstead fan either.

He notoriously went rogue frequently, got into trouble, and was so self-righteous that it became irksome.

Nevertheless, I still preferred the amber-haired Halstead brother to Chicago PD‘s Jay Halstead.

But the funny thing about Will Halstead is that, for as obnoxious as he could be, there was always an endearing quality to him.

He got along well enough with many of the other characters. Will was around since the series’ inception. It’s almost impossible not to have a soft spot for the OG members of Gaffney.

Sure, he had his annoying moments, and he got on my nerves, but like a close friend or family member, there was a familiarity there.

We went through the Chicago Med trenches with Will Halstead.

So while I didn’t exactly shed a tear when he departed the series and was off to have his happily ever after with Natalie, I was surprised to feel a spark of something when Deadline reported that Nick Gehlfuss would reprise his role in the upcoming season.

I’m curious to see what capacity will bring him to the hospital. Traditionally, in a medical drama, a specific case would require his area of expertise.

We know he has a background in field medicine. He worked as a doctor in Sudan and also had a history of being a plastic surgeon. However, he is best known for his expertise in emergency medicine.

Whatever job he finds since departing will likely be the cause of his return. And we don’t know how many episodes he’ll be sticking around for during his guest-star stint.

I’d like to know if we’ll get an update about whether he’s still with Natalie and if they’re living happily together, or if they’ve even gotten married.

But more than anything, I’m hype about our OG Problem Child crossing paths with our New One.

Seriously, consider me firmly planted in my seat for the Ripley and Halstead scenes. There are numerous ways this could unfold, and any of them would be interesting.

Will may have mellowed out from his old days, especially given that he had to leave Gaffney due to some past controversy.

If we have something akin to a Will that has truly grown, it would be interesting to see him come face-to-face with Ripley, who still has a lot of growing up and evolution that he has to do.

And if anyone can give him some guidance on how to do that or even serve as an example or a cautionary tale, then it’s Will.

But we could also have the same old Will, and the two of them on a case together doing the absolute most onscreen would be too much for everyone to handle. However, it would be entertaining as hell!

If we have the Chaos Twins working side by side, I would be here for that type of drama, and putting any grievances about either guy aside for the sake of that entertainment would be no problem.

Better yet, it would be particularly hilarious if they managed to clash while working together. There’s nothing like a beef between two people who are more alike than different.

It’s amusing because that person always lacks self-awareness and gets a taste of their own medicine by dealing with someone who serves as a mirror, reflecting back to them.

Of course, both have a long history of messy love lives, so that’s also something the two of them could commiserate with one another about, and that’ll be appealing to the masses, but that’s less thrilling.

Yes, Will’s return is exciting for nostalgia purposes, but I’m also here for the drama and chaos.
