Dakota Johnson's 'Materialists' Plays Into Rom-Com Tropes in the Best Way
When Celine Song's debut film, Past Lives, was first released in theaters, it surprised audiences with its profound and gentle handling of human relationships, love, and the deconstruction of myths about fate and destiny. However, it also somehow affirms them at the same time with the story of two people who were seemingly destined to be together, only for life and distance to forge new paths in their respective lives. Now, with Song's latest film, Materialists, the writer and director returns to the romance genre, only this time (if the marketing for the film is to be believed), leaning into all the trappings of a typical romantic comedy.
