David Lynch planned LA-set mystery series ‘Unrecorded Night’ for Netflix before COVID

Details have emerged about an abandoned David Lynch project, which was commissioned by Netflix but delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lynch, the visionary known for the TV show Twin Peaks and films such as Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead, passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles in January, after being evacuated during the city’s wild fires. He was 78.

In March, Naomi Watts said the filmmaker was planning more projects during their last meeting together, while Netflix chief Ted Sarandos revealed in a tribute post shortly after his death that he pitched them a limited series “filled with mystery and risks”.

A new interview sheds light on what that might have been. Peter Deming, Lynch’s collaborator on many projects including Twin Peaks: The Return, spoke to The Film Stage about the shelved project, titled Unrecorded Night.

“Shortly before he passed––well, like a year, because it was pre-COVID––there was Unrecorded Night, which he had written. I’d read it, and we actually went on one scout, looking at locations” he recalled. “Then COVID hit, so everything shut down and it never rekindled”.

Regarding rumours that the series might be connected to Twin Peaks, he said: “It’s definitely its own original thing, and how it was formatted, I don’t really know. It was going to be a lot of episodes, because David really liked what he called ‘the continuing story’”.

He continued: “I really love the feature stuff, but he was like, ‘I’m not going to make any more movies. I’m just going to make longer stories because I love the longer story’”.

Deming said of the script: “It took me three sittings to read it because it was so thick, but it was definitely not Twin Peaks. It was definitely a really interesting… mystery, I would say. Yeah, it’s too bad. It really is. Because it would’ve been good”.

While he was hesitant to reveal any specific details about the show, he did say it was set in LA. “He loved to make films about Los Angeles” he said “He wasn’t trying to hide the setting. To me, this was another LA canon for him, and one that sort of mixed in filmmaking and Old Hollywood a bit, and it was just, maybe, number four in that line of products”.

Tributes to the filmmaker continued at Cannes, where French singer Mylène Farmer dedicated a haunting performance of the song ‘Confession’ to him. An auction has also been announced, where over 400 items on sale including his director’s chair, his personal 35mm print of Eraserhead, rugs from Twin Peaks and other memorabilia from Mulholland Drive.
