Every DC show and film you need to watch before ‘Peacemaker’ season two

John Cena and Danielle Brooks in 'Peacemaker' season 2

Peacemaker season two is finally here, but what previous DC films and shows should fans watch before getting stuck in? Find out below.

The John Cena-driven superhero series began as a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, which was part of the DC Extended Universe at the time. The first season aired in early 2022 and followed the jingoistic mercenary Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker.

Since then, the new incarnation of DC Studios has launched, with James Gunn at the head, and the new DC Universe opened with Gunn’s Superman earlier this summer.

Peacemaker season two is now the first live action television series in the DC Universe, with the first episode debuting on HBO Max in the US on Thursday (August 21). The remaining seven episodes will air weekly until the finale on October 9. In the UK, episodes will air the following day on Sky Max and NOW.

Alongside Cena will be returning stars Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee and Robert Patrick, as well as newcomers Michael Rooker, Frank Grillo and David Denman.

The first season of Peacemaker was a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, so newcomers to the show that want to be completist should begin here.

That film was written and directed by James Gunn and was itself a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. An action-comedy critical success but box office failure, it introduced Cena’s Peacemaker character, a ruthless, jingoistic killer that claims to believe in achieving peace at any cost. The film sets up Peacemaker’s rivalry with Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr.

The next step is to take in the first season of Peacemaker, which develops the Chris Smith character. While it was made before the ‘soft reboot’ from the DC Extended Universe into the DC Universe and therefore includes elements that are now being retconned, it sets up many of the events of the new season.

The animated series Creature Commandos is also an important component to the new season. The animated series shows Amanda Waller forming a team of monsters that includes Rick Flag Jr and connects directly with the live-action DCU.

The final piece in the puzzle is Superman, the launchpad for the ‘Gods And Monsters’ chapter of the DCU. That film established the basis of the multiverse that will be the key to the franchise, and Peacemaker season two picks up shortly after the film’s events. Cena also made a brief cameo in the film.
