"Godspeed": Tom Hanks Pays Tribute to Late 'Apollo 13' Astronaut
On August 7, 2025, space travel legend Jim Lovell, who was one of the first astronauts to orbit the moon, passed away at the age of 97. Lovell earned his place in history simply by virtue of his spot on that mission, but in 1970, he further cemented his stature by commanding Apollo 13, one of the most important space race missions that was ever carried out. This was the failed mission that put Lovell in peril — as well as his two flying partners — when they were trying to get to the moon. Decades later, that harrowing mission served as the basis of Ron Howard's 1995 sci-fi drama Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks as Lovell.
