I Watched the Supernatural Pilot 20 Years Later, and I Have Thoughts

Even if you’ve never seen an episode of Supernatural, you must be familiar with it.

The show has been experiencing a renaissance as its cast is featured in currently popular projects, and some reunions are imminent.

As a huge fan of The Boys, Fire Country, and Walker, I was exposed to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles before I watched them in their career-making roles as Sam and Dean Winchester.

This is not my first time in the Supernatural universe.

I tried to watch the spinoff, The Winchesters, and it was so underwhelming that I shut myself off from everything Supernatural.

However, of late, I’ve been craving supernatural dramas. With The CW out of business, the only place to look is in the past.

I love how I can get lost in supernatural shows because I don’t critique what’s presented too much.

So, as a first-time viewer, I watched the Supernatural pilot, and to my surprise, I really liked it.

A 9/10 Pilot

It was weird seeing younger versions of Padalecki and Ackles. I’ve gotten used to them with full beards and deep voices, so seeing their 20-something look was an experience.

The pilot episode is an opportunity to sell viewers on the story, and this one succeeds.

They pull all the stops. From the visual effects (at least for the 2000s) to the characters and cases, it’s pretty intriguing.

At the heart of it are the brothers.

The decision to center this story on the brothers is great because professional pairings and special teams dominate the current television landscape, so seeing characters with a deeper bond is refreshing.

The dynamic between Sam and Dean is the best thing about the show.

Anyone who grew up with siblings knows how much adjusting is needed depending on the sibling and when you catch them.

With Sam and Dean, it’s a typical younger-older brother relationship.

There is some teasing, great care, and idolization going on. Even if Sam claims that he wants to be different than his brother and dad, he seems to like their lifestyle.

He might not want to be heavily involved, but he enjoys it.

The brothers are not as close as they should be because Dean is always chasing some goal, and so is Sam.

However, these goals don’t intersect. This disconnect is something I hope to see addressed in future episodes.

If there are no horrors, I’m not watching, and thankfully, the show tries to develop a visually and emotionally terrifying case of a woman seducing men and killing them.

Two thousand and five was a while ago, and the world was different back then, so I was concerned about exploitation, especially of female bodies.

The skimply dressed girlfriend and the sexual demon are not a great start, but with the demon, it works with the story. And I guess the girlfriend, too.

But will this be a recurring theme? We’ll see.

Overall, the cases have lore and logic to them, so that adds an extra layer of entertainment.

The pilot episode also teases a mastery of the art of the cliffhanger, making the show quite binge-worthy.

Supernatural exposes everything that TV is missing currently, and I’m going to enjoy this.

Stray Thoughts

It is pretty funny to hear Sam mock his brother for having cassettes in his car. What should he have? Compact discs? Oh, boy, do I have news for you, Sam.

Sinners might have ruined the name Sammy for me. If it’s not Jack O’Connell saying “Shaaammyy,” then I don’t want it.

Has TV always had a “pretty people problem?”

Why does everyone look like they came straight out of a modelling catalogue? I can see why the show was popular.

That Dean sure’s got a mouth on him.

Over to you, Supernatural Fanatics.

Have you watched the whole show?

What did you think when you watched it? Was it an instant favorite, or did it take some time for you to warm up? Do you rewatch frequently? If you never watched, why not?

If you’re looking for more conversations about classic TV, we’re building an entire section of the site around it, so go poke around. You might find something fun to watch.
