James Gunn denies Robin will appear in ‘The Batman 2’: “Please stop believing this nonsense”

The Batman

James Gunn has shot down rumours that Robin will appear in The Batman 2, telling fans to “stop believing this nonsense”.

The sequel to 2022’s The Batman is in pre-production now, with the script having been completed by Matt Reeves, who will return as director, and Matson Tomlin. Production is expected to begin in the spring, with a release date set for October 1, 2027.

Despite the film being at its early stages, it has not stopped rumours from spreading throughout the internet in recent weeks about the contents of the script, with some convinced that Batman’s longtime sidekick Robin, aka Dick Grayson, would be a part of the film.

Gunn, who is the co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, took to Threads on Friday (August 8), to dispel the rumours directly.

“Guys please stop believing this nonsense,” he wrote. “I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about the Batman 2.”

In another post, he said: “Anything you’ve heard about that movie is made up or a guess. No one in the world knows anything about the concept for the story except four people.”

Gunn has previously defended the “slow” progress of The Batman 2, arguing that fans “don’t need to be entitled about it”.

The first film, starring Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano and Colin Farrell, was a box office and critical success in 2022. In a four-star review, NME wrote: “There’s no tired retreading of Bruce Wayne’s origin story in The Batman. Instead, it finds him post-induction – beaten-down, lonely and isolated.”

The Batman and its sequel exist on a separate timeline from the new DC Universe that launched this summer with Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

However, last month, Gunn discussed the possibility of Corenswet’s Superman and Pattinson’s Batman coming together in a future film. “We’ve talked about it before,” he said. “But it’s not what’s happening right now. Everything is in flux, so we’ll figure out what we’re doing next.”

In a three-star review of SupermanNME wrote: “To give Gunn his due, he crafts a world that’s as close to the DC Comics Superman that we’ve ever seen, with characters like the shapeshifting Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) adding real texture. It’s a promising start-point to his plans for the DC Universe.”

“And while the good-versus-evil plot does little to push the envelope, the idea of Superman being an alien peacekeeper is surely going to stir up political controversies back in Gunn’s MAGA-homeland. Mainly, though, just give us more Krypto – this canine really is super.”
