Actor John Cusack has been criticised for sharing a meme on his Bluesky account that users have described as “antisemitic”.

The actor, known for films such as Con Air and High Fidelity, is a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, and on Tuesday (July 7) Deadline reported that he shared a graphic making unfounded speculation linking Antony Blinken, the Jewish former U.S. secretary of state, to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The graphic shows a picture of Blinken linked to one of his stepfather Samuel Pisar, who was a lawyer for media magnate Robert Maxwell. The newspaper owner, who died after falling from his yacht in 1991, is the father of Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker with links to Jeffrey Epstein. Both Maxwells and Epstein are labelled as “Mossad Agents” in the graphic – there is no evidence to suggest any were involved with the Israeli organisation.

The post was later removed, although screenshots have circulated online.

Deadline describes the theory of Ghislaine Maxwell and Epstein being Mossad agents as a popular conspiracy theory among right wing social media users. The use of the Star Of David, a symbol of the Jewish faith, also leans on historic antisemitic conspiracies of Jewish-led systems of power.

Mike Masnick, a Bluesky board member and founder of the Techdirt blog, called the post “antisemitic shit” on the platform, and posted a screengrab of what he describes as Cusack “doubling down” on his theories in replies.

In the picture, the actor replies to a user denying he is antisemitic, writing: “it’s not antisemitic to be critical of a nation state”, but reiterates that he believes that “(Jeffrey) Epstein was a mossad op”.

Ah. I see John may have deleted the Daily Stormer Nazi shit he posted yesterday, in which he "linked" Anthony Blinken to Jeffrey Epstein with red strings on a corkboard by pointing out that they and some colleagues were Jewish… but he's doubling down.

In 2019, John Cusack apologised for posting a tweet that was also criticised as antisemitic. The meme, which has since been deleted, showed a large hand with a Star of David on its wrist, oppressing a group of people.

Cusack initially blamed his comments on a Twitter bot before he said he had “mistakenly retweeted an alt-right account”, believing the image related to an Israeli hospital bombing.
