‘Knives Out 3’ to open London Film Festival

Knives Out

The third Knives Out movie is set to be the opening night film for this year’s London Film Festival, which runs from October 8 to 19.

Titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Daniel Craig once again stars with writer-director Rian Johnson returning behind the camera. The trilogy began with 2019’s Knives Out, a comedic murder mystery inspired by Agatha Christie and other detective stories. It was a surprise box office hit, prompting Netflix to buy the rights to the sequels in 2021 for a reported $450Million (£330Million).

The first sequel from the streamer was 2022’s Glass Onion, which had a limited release before coming to the service, and had Craig’s character Benoit Blanc investigating a new case with a different ensemble cast. Wake Up Dead Man is reportedly the final film in that initial Netflix deal, although Johnson has acknowledged the possibility of more films after this.

A British Film Institute (BFI) press release revealed: “The 69th BFI London Film Festival (8 to 19 October) in partnership with American Express is excited to announce that this year’s Opening Night Gala will be the eagerly anticipated international premiere of the Netflix film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, by director Rian Johnson, at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall”.

It said of the film: “Daniel Craig returns in his role of famed private detective Benoit Blanc for his most dangerous case yet. This time around will see Blanc unravelling a brand-new murder mystery in an as-yet-undisclosed setting, surrounded by a colourful new cast of suspects”.

The new ensemble cast includes Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set for a streaming release on December 12. Late last year, Craig called on Netflix to release the film in cinemas for longer than its predecessor, which only lasted a week.
