Wolf Alice have shared new single ‘The Sofa’ – check it out below.

The new track has been debuted at a series of live gigs recently, and is taken from the north London quartet’s upcoming album, ‘The Clearing’, which is set for release on Friday, August 29 via Sony Music – you can pre-order it here.

The Ellie Rowsell-penned piano ballad grapples with unrealised dreams and accepting life’s quieter moments: “Didn’t make it out to California / Where I thought I might clean the slate / Feels a little like I’m stuck in Seven Sisters / North London, oh England / And maybe that’s ok.”

Discussing the song, Rowsell said it was about “not trying so hard to figure everything out”, as well as reflecting on ageing and attempting to get to grips with “things that have or haven’t happened in your life”.

“It’s also about trying to get to grips with the polarising aspects of one’s life when you’re in a band,” she added.

“You’ve just played a huge tour – and you come home, and you have your dinner on the sofa. For me, it’s summed up in how I treat TV. I used to never watch the same thing twice because I thought I’ve got so much to discover! And now I’m like, It’s okay if I just want to rewatch Peep Show for the thirteenth time.”

The accompanying video was shot by Fiona Jane Burgess, and sees the band planted in their native North London as Rowsell is transported on a surrealist fantasy – having never left the comfort of her sofa.

Wolf Alice recently joined NME backstage at Glastonbury 2025 to discuss the new album and reflect on the 10th anniversary of their debut, ‘My Love Is Cool’.

“The new stuff always breathes life into the old stuff,” said Joel Amey of their new material. “So everything feels like a bit of a renewal, especially in the early shows. So it’s been really great.”

Touching on how ‘Blue Weekend’ and the response to songs like ‘Delicious Things’ influenced the album, Joff Oddie added: “I think we were buoyed by the songier songs being things that people really connected to and we spent a lot more time working on those constituency, songy song parts of the songs.

“It’s the hardest thing in the world to write a really concise song in a – I don’t wanna say pop structure, but you know what I mean. It’s quite easy to throw a five-minute jam together, but that’s so difficult, so it’s a brilliant challenge and that’s more so where we were focused with this album.”

NME gave Wolf Alice’s Glastonbury 2025 performance five stars, writing: “The energy they pour into today’s set feels like that of a band who should be topping the Pyramid Stage next time they play Worthy Farm.

“As the set ends with ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ – a strong contender for one of the best, most dizzyingly accurate love songs ever written – that feeling only intensifies. That song finds Rowsell writing herself a romantic Hollywood ending; Wolf Alice’s world-beating set does the same for Glastonbury 2025.”
