'M*A*S*H' Used Everyone's Favorite Character To Quietly Sneak in Political Commentary

Airing for 11 seasons and regarded as one of the greatest television series of all time, M*A*S*H is a cultural institution beloved by many. Besides providing television audiences with entertainment that blended comedy and drama, it addressed many social issues related to the Vietnam War, which was ongoing when the series began in 1972. At a time when images of graphic violence were beaming across television sets depicting carnage overseas, M*A*S*H looked at the human cost of warfare through a sardonic vision draped in black comedy. Of all the characters who appeared in M*A*S*H, none served as the voice of a generation more than Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, portrayed by Alan Alda.
