'The Last of Us' Fans Must Watch 'The Road'

When trying to figure out the influences behind the legendary 2013 video game The Last of Us, which has recently been successfully adapted for the small screen by HBO, one might be tempted to direct their attention to other zombie media, like the Night of the Living Dead and The Walking Dead franchises. However, in a 2013 interview with GamesBeat, the game's creative directors, Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann (the latter of whom also co-created the HBO series), revealed that the game's main influences came from the literary world. Specifically, the creators cited Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning 2006 novel The Road, which centers on an unnamed father and son as they trek across a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape following an unspecified cataclysm, as one of the game's primary inspirations.
