Oasis kick off their first show in 16 years with ‘Hello’

Oasis made their triumphant return to the stage tonight, kicking off their first show in 16 years with ‘Hello’.

The Britpop icons announced their reunion last August and tonight (July 4) they played the first of 19 massive UK and Ireland stadium shows in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

For the past 11 months, speculation has been running wild among the band’s fanbase about their first setlist and at 8:15pm, more than 70,000 in attendance were treated to the opening track from 1995’s ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ as the first Oasis song performed by the band since V Festival 2009.

Hello, hello / Said it’s good to be back, it’s good to be back,” came the familiar refrain from Liam Gallagher, before the band then launched into a raucous version of ‘Acquiesce’, the beloved B-side from the same era.

With a Manchester City flag draped over an amp on stage, Noel and Liam were joined on stage – as exclusively revealed by NME – by past members Andy Bell on bass and Gem Archer and Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs on guitars, along with newcomer Joey Waronker on drums.

Before their arrival, Cast and Richard Ashcroft played their first opening sets of the Live ‘25 Tour, with the former dedicating ‘Walkaway’ to the late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, and the latter leading the crowd in huge singalongs to ‘The Drugs Don’t Work, ‘Lucky Man’ and ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’.

The growing anticipation and hype ahead of tonight’s show had reached a peak this week, with audio clips from the stadium emerging online giving hints at what fans could expect from the setlist. An impressive drone display depicting Oasis’ logo also appeared above the Principality Stadium on Thursday (July 3).

Noel had further whetted fans’ appetites in recent days by teasing that the band were “sounding huge” in their rehearsals and that there was “no going back now”.

Oasis will play a second date in Cardiff tomorrow (July 5) ahead of five homecoming shows at Manchester’s Heaton Park, seven nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, and stops in Edinburgh and Dublin. Later on the ‘Oasis Live ’25’ trek, they’ll head to North America, South AmericaAustraliaSouth Korea and Japan.

Last month saw Liam and Noel appear together in an Adidas Originals advert as part of a new partnership with the brand. They also teamed up with Bohemian FC for a new football shirt to mark their return.
