Severance Proves We Want More TV Shows to Theorize About

Watching Severance quickly gain widespread popularity during its second season was not shocking but definitely pleasantly surprising.

Since the beginning of Severance Season 1, fans of the show have begun theorizing about Lumon’s true intentions.

These speculations became even more amplified, and more theories emerged as the show continued to reveal more information about the mysterious company.

A lot of the draw for Severance is the fantastic writing. But at a high level, people are always yearning for a show to watch that’s mysterious but also not overbearing on the mystery part, like a traditional detective series.

So, Severance has filled that gap for a ton of eager viewers and proves that the long tradition of fan communities gathering to discuss and analyze TV dramas with big mysteries must continue.

Fan Culture Since The Dawn of the Internet

Severance may be a revolutionary show in terms of its writing and storytelling. It certainly isn’t the first show to draw such a dedicated audience that’s committed to dissecting every little detail.

X-Files fans were among the earliest internet-driven fandoms to rely on discussing weekly episodes.

Another example of this is Lost, which was arguably one of the most influential shows in the early 2000s, engaging viewers week after week.

Sci-fi dramas with mysteries to unravel have historically motivated fans to discuss and build a community around a show.

Severance fulfills that niche for a lot of people, and it’s one of the first streaming shows to do so.

If anything, its success with keeping viewers engaged and curious speaks to the importance of the weekly release format.

Though Severance was a streaming show, episodes dropped weekly in a traditional broadcast style that many streamers are using for popular shows as opposed to Netflix’s binge-drop style.

This then opens up the possibility for other streaming shows to start returning to the sci-fi drama genre with equal rigor and determination to give weekly viewers something to investigate.

Severance & Maintaining the Mystery

The key to Severance’s success in its second season is that it provided some answers to the larger questions while raising plenty of new ones.

For example, they finally explained what was going on with the goats at Lumon and where Gemma was, which were huge unsolved cliffhangers from the first season.

In doing so, the show also brings up new questions. Have other people gone through something similar to what’s happening to Gemma? What more is Lumon hiding?

By rewarding theorists with a confirmation or denial of their speculation, Severance encourages viewers to continue to tune into the show to find out more about the unanswered questions.

Of course, this is a delicate balancing act, as even in Severance Season 2, the show arguably faltered a few times in terms of clearly trying to write around some barriers, including the exit of John Turturro from the show.

Worth the Wait

But overall, Severance proves that in just a few seasons, it has already earned its place as one of the most iconic sci-fi dramas of the past few years, earning viral online buzz and a passionate following.

With Severance Season 3 coming up, we’ll get to see whether it proves the fan theories post-season two true and what more mysteries Lumon has for us to unravel.

Given that the sophomore season was released three years after the first, the wait may be long, but it gives fans plenty of time to take a shot at predicting what might happen next to the beloved Microdata Refinement employees.
