'Sovereign' Review: Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay are Fantastic in Disquieting Crime Thriller
The only ounce of comedy in writer-director Christian Swegal's disquieting 2025 Tribeca crime dramaSovereign is Nick Offerman's undying mission (whether conscious or subconscious) to play a man who hates the government. The Emmy-winning actor is renowned for his hilariously stoic performance as Parks and Recreation's Ron Swanson, an all-American libertarian man who loves woodworking, bacon and Lagavulin 16 Single Malt Scotch Whisky. And Offerman's award-winning 2023 guest role as Bill in The Last of Us episode “Long Long Time" saw him transform into a closeted gay man and conspiracy theorist who believes 9/11 was an inside job and that "the government are all Nazis." With these memorable performances behind him, Offerman takes on the most daunting anti-government character of his career in Sovereign, unveiling another layer of performance that penetrates and lingers long after the credits roll.
