Spoon are back with two surprise singles called ‘Chateau Blues’ and ‘Guess I’m Fallin In Love’. Check them out below.

The two new songs were both recorded over the summer by the band, who took to the studio for their first new recordings since their Grammy-nominated album ‘Lucifer On The Sofa’. That was indie veterans’ 10th studio album, and their self-proclaimed “purest rock’n’roll record to date”. It arrived in 2022, on the heels of 2017’s ‘Hot Thoughts’.

Now, the two latest songs see them harness the raw rock sound again. The first new song is the gritty, blues-inspired ‘Chateau Blues’, which comes riff with traditional rock riffs and powerful vocals from singer John Britt Daniel.

The second is the more elaborate and intriguing ‘Guess I’m Fallin In Love’, which comes with the band’s signature blend of emotive vocals and stripped-back, intentional melodies. “Every morning’s the same old thing/ Guess I’m falling in love/ Every morning, you’re there again/ Looks like I’m falling in love,” the frontman croons in the opening verse.

Check out both below.

Both new songs were produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Nine Inch Nails, St. Vincent) and Spoon. Speaking of the inspiration behind them, the band said: “We started work on an album this year and the way that normally goes, we write, we rehearse, we record, we mix, we get it all wrapped up tightly and then start putting songs out into the world. But as we finished up the first two songs for the LP, it crossed somebody’s mind and eventually all of ours that these two really should come out now. Let’s get them out there.”

“And so here they are today, ‘Chateau Blues’ and ‘Guess I’m Fallin In Love.’ Two new tunes with distinct personalities that were summoned into the world the past few months in Austin TX and Providence RI,” they added.

“It’s a big day all around: tonight we kick off our first tour in a while in Santa Ana, and tomorrow we start up our run with the Pixies — let’s face it, one of the great bands of all TIMES. A band that some may know has long been near and dear to me. It’s a real pleasure and we’re real happy to be getting back into gig world for a sec. See you down front.”

Speaking to NME in 2018, Spoon talked about wanting to move away from the “futuristic” vibe of ‘Hot Thoughts’ and venture further into the realm of classic rock for album 10.

“It’s a record we decided we wanted to make when we were touring the last one,” Daniel told NME at the time. “We toured ‘Hot Thoughts’ longer and with more shows than any other album we’ve ever done, which is saying a lot. While we were out there, we kept discovering that we were playing the songs from the last album better on the road than they were on the record.

“So the idea was to take that energy that you get from playing songs live and being on the road and hashing out the songs, using that energy first. So you’re not starting with a demo and building on it; you’re actually getting in a room and experiencing that sound together and working from there. You’re not figuring out the song as you record it. You figure it out, then you record it. That was a big part of it.”
