The Cure have marked frontman Robert Smith‘s birthday by announcing details of ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’ – a new remix album of their acclaimed 2024 comeback record ‘Songs Of A Lost World‘ featuring the likes of Four Tet, Mogwai, and DeftonesChino Moreno. Check out the full tracklist and format details below.

Last year saw the alt-rock icons release the acclaimed and emotionally-packed ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ – the long-mooted first album from the band in 16 years. Back in 2020, Smith told NME that the band were hard at work on “two new albums and an hour of noise”.

The frontman has since confirmed that a “companion piece” album is “ready to go” (and will hopefully be complete and released before a yet-to-be-announced 2025 world tour), with the band also still at work on another record of “completely random stuff“.

With anticipation high for the new records and details of the tour, The Cure have this week been teasing fans with an announcement – but have now used Smith’s 66th birthday to share details of ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’, featuring 24 reworked tracks from their last album, to be released on June 13 to benefit the charity War Child.

“Just after Christmas, I was sent a couple of unsolicited remixes of ‘Songs Of A Lost World tracks and I really loved them,” said Smith. “The Cure has a colourful history with all kinds of dance music, and I was curious as to how the whole album would sound entirely reinterpreted by others.

“This curiosity resulted in a fabulous trip through all eight songs by 24 wonderful artists and remixers and is way beyond anything I could have hoped for.”

He continued: “Giving our recording royalties from the project to War Child helps make ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’ an even more special release.”

The release has already been previewed by Four Tet’s remix of the single ‘Alone’, recently released on vinyl for Record Store Day to benefit Médecins Sans Frontières. Now, the full tracklisting across multiple formats has been released – including Paul Oakenfold, Mura Masa, frequent touring friends Mogwai, past collaborators 65DaysOfStatic, and Deftones’ Chino Moreno (returning the favour after he put his own spin on ‘Teenager’ for the ‘White Pony’ remix album ‘Black Stallion‘ and leant vocals to ††† (Crosses)’ ‘Girls Float + Boys Cry‘).

Check out Oakenfold’s remix of ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ and Four Tet’s ‘Alone’ below.

‘Mixes Of A Lost World’ will be available as triple LP/cd/cassette deluxe editions featuring both the ‘Artists’ & ‘Remixers’ tracks. The three LP set includes three half speed mastered 180g heavyweight black bio vinyl LPs, a tri-gatefold printed sleeve, and a large foldout poster; the triple deluxe CD has an eight-panel digi-sleeve and includes a foldout poster; the limited edition three cassette set has individually printed o-cards and obi-strip and is exclusive to The Cure store.

The double LP/CD/cassette edition features the ‘Remixers’ tracks only and comes as a black vinyl double LP with a gatefold sleeve; a double CD in six-panel digisleeve includes foldout CD poster; the limited edition double cassette has individually printed o-cards and obi-strip is also exclusive to The Cure store.

The remix edition comes after The Cure recently released the live version of ‘Songs A Lost World’ with ‘Songs Of A Live World Troxy London MMXXIV’ – capturing the band performing the record in full at London’s Troxy last year before a set of greatest hits and fan favourites.

The band famously released the classic remix albums ‘Mixed Up’ and Torn Down’ in 1990, before a re-release in 2018.

It is hoped that the coming months will see news of The Cure’s 15th album (said to feature “the saddest song” of the band’s recent batch and with ‘It Can Never Be The Same’ and ‘A Boy I Never Knew’ confirmed to be on the tracklist), as well as details of the promised 2025 world tour. ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ dealt with Smith losing his brother and a number of close family members.

Speaking about the band’s plans for a full world tour last year, Smith said he’d be aiming to complete one of the LPs before hitting the road again in 2025 before they release a long-awaited film project with director Tim Pope and begin the process of celebrating their 50th anniversary before winding down.

“We’ll start up again [in 2025],” said Smith. “Seriously, I have to finish the second album. We were going to play festivals next year, but then I decided that we weren’t going to play anything next summer. The next time we go out on stage will be autumn next year.

“But then we’ll probably be playing quite regularly through until the next anniversary – the 2028 anniversary! It’s looming on the horizon. The 2018 one, I started to think about in late 2016, thinking, ‘I’ve got a year and a half, it’s easy!’ And yet I still didn’t manage to get there in time. Now, I’m starting to think, ‘2028, I must get things in order’; so [that’s] the documentary film and things like that.”

He continued: “I’m 70 in 2029, and that’s the 50th anniversary of the first Cure album. That’s it, that really is it. If I make it that far, that’s it. In the intervening time, I’d like us to include playing concerts as part of the overall plan of what we’re going to do. I’ve loved it; the last 10 years of playing shows have been the best 10 years of being in the band. It pisses all over the other 30 years! It’s been great.

“Not having a new album for all that period of time, we’ve played 130 or 150 different songs because we’ve turned into a live band that draws on the catalogue. We can go out and play shows, and we can play two hours of 30 songs and completely different songs each night. There’s a freedom to that.”

In a five-star review of ‘Songs Of A Lost World‘ – which went on to be named one of our Best Albums Of 2024NME wrote: “Merciless? Yes, but there’s always enough heart in the darkness and opulence in the sound to hold you and place these songs alongside The Cure’s finest. The frontman suggested that another two records may be arriving at some point, but ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ feels sufficient enough for the wait we’ve endured, just for being arguably the most personal album of Smith’s career. Mortality may loom, but there’s colour in the black and flowers on the grave.”
