The last film David Lynch worked on will debut at Locarno Film Festival

David Lynch

Legend Of The Happy Worker, the last film to feature participation from David Lynch, has announced its premiere at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival.

Known for visionary classics such as the TV show Twin Peaks, as well as films such as Dune and The Elephant Man; Lynch passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles in January, after being evacuated during the city’s wild fires. He was 78.

While he hadn’t directed anything since 2017 series Twin Peaks: The Return, the filmmaker appeared in projects such as Steven Spielberg’s 2022 drama The Fabelmans, and is credited as Executive Producer on Legend Of The Happy Worker, a drama directed by Duwayne Dunham, who served as editor on Twin Peaks.

Starring Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3) and Colm Meaney (Gangs Of London), the official synopsis says the film “follows Joe (Josh Whitehouse) who battles to save what he and others have spent years building”.

An article from The Hollywood Reporter states film will premiere out of competition at Locarno, with the Swiss-based festival running from August 6-16. The date for the film’s premiere is not yet announced.

Recently, there has been much discussion around Unrecorded Night, the Netflix series that David Lynch was working on prior to his death. The show got as far as location scouting, according to the filmmaker’s regular cinematographer, but was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Long-time Lynch producer Sabrina Sutherland called the script “the best thing he ever did”.

Last month, Peter Deming, who worked with him on many projects, revealed it may be released to the public as a book. “I think it was a discussion that began when David started having health problems and whether he would be able to make it” he explained.

Elsewhere, tributes were paid to singer-songwriter Rebekah Del Rio, who died June 23 aged 57. She sang a haunting rendition of ‘Llorando’ in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive.
