'The Late Show's Demise Is a Wake up Call for Network Television

Not even the "Colbert bump" could save Stephen Colbert from the harsh realities of corporate entertainment. Late-night television in its current iteration is little more than a house of cards atop a wobbly table. Stephen Colbert's reign as the host of The Late Show is over, as is the show itself and the future of the talk-show format on CBS. After 30-plus years, the show made popular by David Letterman will meet an ignoble end, being canceled and growing irrelevant in public discourse. As of May 2026, the end of Colbert's current contract, the fate of late-night TV as an institution looks bleak.
