All six episodes of the show arrived on the streaming platform on June 6, with Charlie Vickers (The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power) playing Kieran Elliott, a resident of Evelyn Bay, Tasmania who returns home 15 years after a deadly storm hit the coastal town.

The storm caused the deaths of three of Kieran’s friends and family, and when he returns, now with his own family, the past traumas re-emerge when a young woman is murdered. The Evelyn Bay community finds itself desperately searching for answers and over the course of the show, they begin to uncover mysteries from the past.

The Survivors is created by Tony Ayres and also stars Yerin Ha, Robyn Malcolm, Thom Green, George Mason, Don Hany and Jessica De Gouw.

No, The Survivors is now based on a true story. The series is a fictional thriller that has been adapted from a 2020 novel of the same name by Jane Harper, an Australian author also known for crime novels The Dry, Force Of Nature and The Lost Man.

The show was inspired by Harper’s time living in Tasmania and she drew heavily from the area’s dramatic coastal landscapes.

Series showrunner Tony Ayres has spoken about his inspirations while making the show, telling Tudum: “I often describe the show as a Trojan horse. It’s a family melodrama disguised as a murder mystery. Because the things that are really at its heart are things like a son wanting his mother’s love and the mother who just cannot afford to give it because her whole world might fall apart.”
