Watch The Smashing Pumpkins bring their ‘Aghori’ tour to London’s Gunnersbury Park

The Smashing Pumpkins played a huge headline show at Gunnersbury Park in London last night (August 10). Check out footage and the full setlist below.

Frontman Billy Corgan and co. made their return to the UK capital for the summer series in West London, and their set followed on from a massive headline show from The Libertines the night before (August 10). Support for the ‘90s alt-rock icons came from Skunk Anansie, White Lies, Unpeople and Rocket.

Kicking off the show, the band launched into back-to-back renditions of ‘Glass’ Theme’, ‘Heavy Metal Machine’ and ‘Pentagrams’, before going into the classic track ‘Today’ from their 1993 sophomore album ‘Siamese Dream’, and four tracks from their hit LP ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’: ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’, ‘Muzzle’, ‘1979’ and ‘Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans’.

The latter came as the band are currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of that album, which arrived in October 1995 and marked their third studio LP. Other hits played from that record at Gunnersbury included ‘Tonight, Tonight’, ‘Jellybelly’ and ‘Zero’.

Other classic tracks Smashing Pumpkins broke out included ballad ‘Disarm’, as well as hits like ‘Mayonaise’ and ‘Ava Adore’. Newer songs played included ‘Sighommi’ and ‘Edin’ from latest album ‘Aghori Mhori Mei’.

The band kept their tradition of covering the Berlin classic track ‘Take My Breath Away’ midway through their set, made a nod to Black Sabbath‘s ‘N.I.B’, and also teased a couple of times that they were tempted to perform a cover of an Oasis track to celebrate the Britpop icons making their comeback this summer.

“Oasis… I think they’re having a little bit of a comeback,” Corgan said halfway through the set, before adding, “I love Oasis… is this where we should play ‘Champagne Supernova’ and just go for it?”. He then made another nod to the band later in the show, launching into the first few chords of ‘Wonderwall’ before laughing it off.

Check out more footage of the show below, as well as the full setlist.

Speaking to NME about the Gunnersbury Park show in February, Corgan touched on how after “playing all these years, especially together”, the group “now know how to handle those bigger moments”.

“I’m really proud that this particular line-up of the band knows how to rise to those occasions. Whereas when I was young, I would look at those gigs and almost feel intimidated,” he continued.

“Now, I look at those gigs and I want to rub my hands together because it’s so exciting. It’s a chance to create a one-of-a-kind moment in your life and the audience wants it. They want to see you at your peak and that pressure and feeling is magical when it works.”

Earlier this summer, the singer also took to the stage at Black Sabbath’s final ever live concert, ‘Back To The Beginning’ – which took place just 17 days before Ozzy Osbourne’s death, aged 76. He would later pay tribute to the late Prince Of Darkness, saying that it was “like a magical dream” to appear at the historic Birmingham gig.

Smashing Pumpkins’ 13th and latest album, ‘Aghori Mhori Mei’, arrived last year, the band this year are celebrating some milestone anniversaries by sharing 25th anniversary reissues of their 2000 albums ‘Machina/The Machines of God’ and ‘Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music’.

Their UK live shows continue this week with shows at The Piece Hall in Halifax (August 12), Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre (13) and Colchester Castle (14). Visit here for remaining tickets.
